STACKS STONES AT REDBARN, YOUGHAL AFTER A STORM

DURING THE WINTER OF 1996 AT REDBARN STRAND, A STORM EXPOSED A LINE OF STONEWORK. THESE STONES ARE ON EDGE IN ONE SECTION AND ON THE FLAT IN ANOTHER. I COULD NOT DETERMINE THE DEPTH.

EXAMINING IT CLOSELY IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE A DRAIN. IT MAY BE SOME BARRIER AGAINST THE TIDE, PERHAPS A BREAKER, OR PERHAPS IT MARKS A PROPERTY LINE. LOCALLY THEY ARE SAID TO BE CALLED “STACKS STONES”. THEY RUN PARALLEL TO THE SEA AND THE LAND. I HAVE NEVER SEEN THEM BEFORE OR SINCE.
